The last date to link Aadhaar with PAN was previously extended from the 31st of March 2020 to the 30th, September 2021 and now has again been extended to 31st of March, 2022. If you do not link your PAN with your Aadhaar, then your PAN will become inoperative, effective from the 1st of April 2022.
Moreover, from April 1, 2019, it is mandatory to quote and link Aadhaar number while filing Income Tax Return (ITR) unless specifically exempted. Thus, an individual cannot file their ITR without linking their Aadhaar to their PAN.
The amendment to link these two had come into effect from the 1st of September, 2019. According to the Budget 2019 documents, the law was amended to protect the validity of transactions previously carried out using PAN details.
