It is mandatory to link the PAN with the Aadhaar for all individuals. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the deadline from March 31st, 2023 to 30 June 2023. Therefore, individuals who fail to complete the linking may face various consequences. Additionally, the PAN of the holder becomes inoperative. Hence, it is important to link your PAN to the Aadhaar and you can also verify the status of the process on the Income Tax e-Filing website.
Latest Update
The last date to link Aadhaar with PAN is 30th June 2023. Hence, if the individual fails to link their PAN and Aadhar, their PAN will be inoperative. Further, for linking it after 30th June, 2023 they need to pay a certain amount of penalties.

This means from 1 July 2023 onwards, the taxpayers who have not linked PAN & Aadhar, will have to face the following consequences for the period the PAN remains inoperative.
- No refunds shall be issued against such PANs
- No interest on such a refund will be payable
- TDS & TCS deducted/collected shall be at a higher rate
Check Aadhar PAN link status using the Income Tax Portal
Steps to check status via the Income tax Portal:
- Visit the e-filing portal
- Click on Link Aadhaar Status from the left side navigation
- Enter PAN & Aadhaar number and click ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’
- If your PAN Aadhaar is already linked
If your PAN & Aadhaar are already linked, then you will see a pop-up message as your PAN is already linked with your Aadhaar as shown below
- If PAN Aadhaar not linked
If your PAN & Aadhaar are not linked, you will see a pop-up message as your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar. You can follow these steps to “Link Aadhar” with PAN.
Check Aadhar PAN link status by SMS
Step 1:
Write the message – UIDPAN<12 digit aadhar number><10 digit PAN>
Step 2:
Send above mentioned SMS to ‘567678’ or ‘56161’.
Step 3:
If the Aadhar is already linked with PAN the individual will receive the message saying “Aadhaar is already associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.”
However, if the Aadhar is not linked with PAN then they will receive a message containing “Aadhaar is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.”
FAQs
According to a notification from the Finance Ministry, every person who holds a PAN and who is eligible to get an Aadhaar number will have to link the two. The Supreme Court had also upheld Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act making the PAN-Aadhaar linkage mandatory.
PAN shall become inoperative after 30 June 2023. A penalty of INR 10,000/- shall be levied post the due date to link PAN Aadhaar.
