In order to e-file income tax returns using the income tax website, a taxpayer needs to have an e-filing account. Once you have an e-filing account, you can log in and file your ITR online.

You can e-file your ITR on the income tax department’s website in the following two manners:

Option – 1. Prepare and submit the tax return on E-filing website:

Step 1: Login to e-filing website,

Step 2: Navigate to e-File > Income Tax Return

Step 3: Select the ITR Form, Assessment Year, Filing Type and Submission Mode from the drop-down list

Step 4: Choose the prefill option suitable to you.

Step 5: Select a suitable option to verify the income tax return and click on continue

Step 6: A page will appear which is similar to the income tax java utility.

Step 7: Here your personal information would have been pre-filled so all you have to do is enter the incomes and deductions and other relevant details. What are the documents required to file ITR?

Step 8: You can preview & submit the ITR or you can save the draft and file return later on.

Step 9: Upon successful submission of the return, you will be provided with a download link for acknowledgement.

Step 10: You will also receive an acknowledgement on your registered email id.

Option – 2. Upload XML through E-filing Portal:

Step 1: Login to e-filing website, navigate to e-File > Income Tax Return

Step 2: Select the ITR Form, Assessment Year, Filing Type and Submission Mode from the drop-down list

Step 4: You can opt to digitally sign the return if you have a valid USB token

Step 5: On successful submission of the return, you will be provided with a download link for acknowledgement.

Step 6: Your acknowledgement will also be sent to you on your registered email address.

1. Do I need income tax website account to file ITR?

No. IT Department has enabled multiple options to taxpayers to file a return without opening an account. You can file the return with the help of E-return Intermediary (ERI) like Quicko without having an account on the e-Filing website.

This access is given to each taxpayer by the IT Department to manage direct tax-related information of a taxpayer and file their ITR.
