The incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in portal provides access to the income tax-related services for citizens and other stakeholders. The registered users of the portal can access services such as filing an income tax return, pay taxes, view tax credit, the status of tax returns, etc. Additionally, users can get details related to the department, its organizational setup, functions, tax law and rules, international taxation, etc. Moreover, information about PAN, TAN, TDS, Form16, taxpayers, etc is also provided.

Moreover, the user ID depends on the type of user logging into the portal. The below table explains the different types of usernames for different users:

1. Individual/HUF/Other than Individual and HUF Permanent Account Number (PAN)
2. TAN TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number)
3. ERI Starts with ERIA followed by a six-digit number
4. CA Starts with ARCA followed by six-digit membership number of the CA
5. External Agency Starts with EXTA followed by a six-digit number

Additionally, visually challenged users can use the “OTP” option. The OTP is shared to the registered mobile number. After the login process is done, we are redirected to the below page. If the contact details have not been updated before, you will be asked to complete that process. If you wish to continue anyway, you can choose the “Skip” option. Hence, you will be redirected to the dashboard of the portal.

Steps To Set The Security Q&A for IT Login

  1. Once you are logged in to the portal, go to Profile Setting > Change Secret Question (s)/Answer (s)

What is the login ID for my Income Tax e-Filing portal?

Login ID for your Income Tax e-Filing portal will always be your PAN. Passwords, however, may vary.

How can I change my name on the Income Tax e-Filing portal?

The Income-tax e-filing portal retrieves data directly from the Permanent Account Number (PAN) database. Therefore, “Assessee name” and “Birthdate” cannot be changed on the Income Tax e-Filing portal.

How to reset the Income Tax e-Filing password?

You can reset your Income Tax e-Filing password in 4 ways:

1. Answering the secret questions
2. Uploading the digital signature certificate (DSC)
3. Using OTP
4. Using Aadhar OTP

How to disable e-Vault security on the Income-tax e-Filing portal?

You can disable the e-Vault security at any time. Click on Profile Settings > e-Filing Vault – Higher Security. Additionally, unselect the option of “Login using Bank Account EVC” and click the “Proceed” button. Thus, the user will be redirected to a confirmation page. Hence, click on “Disable”. The e-Vault settings have now been changed.

    To improve the tax filing process, the Income Tax Department has decided to do away with the excel and java-based utility and has launched a new offline JSON-based utility for the AY 2021-22. The new utility will help taxpayers import prefilled data and edit it before filing the income tax return (ITR).

    The taxpayers can download the pre-filled data from the income tax e-filing portal and fill in the rest of the data. This imported prefilled data can be edited to change basic information such as address and all. Currently, the utility can be used to file ITR1 to ITR 4. ITD has also released a step-by-step guide to using the utility.

    It is mandatory to create an account on the Income Tax e-filing portal to file your ITR online. It is a hassle-free quicko process. One can register on the portal by providing relevant details such as user type, PAN, first name, surname, date of birth, and fill in the registration form.

    Many times mismatches and discrepancies in actual TDS and TDS credit under Form 26AS happen because of wrong information provided in the TDS return. One can approach the employer/deductor to file a revised TDS return after making the necessary corrections.

    The income-tax department allows an assessee to mention the reason for mismatch in the online portal in answer to a notice sent by them.

  7. Hi, actually I filed ITR 1(A.Y. 2013-14) due to notice served in Jan month.

    The ITR is pending for verification. Ask the options aren’t available for me client i.e Aadhar verification,evc etc. Only thing is I got my clients DSC. but option of DSC for e-verification is not showing. I can’t send CPC to Bengaluru since it will take time. How can I use DSC to e-verify my already filed return

    The option to e-verify ITR using DSC is to be selected while filing. Once you have filed your ITR only option available for e-verification is EVC/Aadhar OTP or sending ITR V to CPC Bangalore. You have 120
    days from the date of e-Filing to e-verify your ITR.

    So if 120 days are not over you can send the signed ITR V to CPC Bangalore to get it e-verified and processed.

    It is suggested to file ITR as NRI in India if you have trading transactions even if there are losses.
    If you do not file ITR then there are high chances of your PAN getting flagged by the IT department for non-filing of ITR.
    Also, If you file the ITR on time you can take benefit of carry forwarding the losses and setting off those losses against the profits in future years.
