It is mandatory to register on the Income Tax Department (ITD) website, to be able to e-file ITR from the ITD website. You can also download your Form 26AS from your income tax e-filing account. Given below are the steps to complete the registration process on the Income Tax e-Filing Website.
Steps to Register as a Taxpayer on the Income Tax e-Filing Website
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal
Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and click on the “Register Yourself” option.
- User Type
Select “User Type” from the drop-down list and click on continue
- Enter the required details
- Validate using OTP
Enter the OTP received on the e-Mail ID and Mobile number and click on Validate to finish the Registration Verification process. If you do not receive OTP then you can click on Resend OTP generate new OTP.
- Success Message
Once OTP Verification is done, the message of successful registration will be shown on the screen.

Can I file ITR on my own?
Yes, once you register yourself on the ITD website, you can log in to your account and e-file your tax return.
The Income Tax department has made many changes over the past couple of years to simplify the process. For a Non-Resident, a valid e-Mail ID will be sufficient to register. All the relevant verification PINs and intimations will be shared with such an e-Mail ID.
Anybody who is less than 60 years of age and has an annual income of more than INR 2.5 Lakh has to file income tax returns, according to the Income Tax Act. For senior citizens, the cut-off is INR 3 Lakh, and for those who are more than 80 years old, the cut off is INR 5 Lakh.
For filling up the verification field, you may use a dummy PAN (FFFPF9999F). It is again clarified, that the dummy PAN can be used only for the verification field and DSC with dummy PAN will not be accepted.
