If you’ve forgotten the password for your Income Tax website login, no need to worry. You can download Form 26AS, e-file ITR and track your refund status using your account on the Income-tax e-filing website.

Steps to reset Income Tax e-Filing account password

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-Filing website

    Go to Income Tax e-Filing website and click on Reset from the right-hand sidebarIncome Tax e-Filing website homepage

  2. Enter the details

    Now enter your PAN, Captcha, and click on Continue.Income Tax e-Filing Website - Reset Password

  3. Choose one from the following options

    1. Answer Secret Question
    2. Upload Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
    3. Using OTP (PINs)
    4. Using Aadhaar OTP
    5. NetBanking Login

  4. Option 1: Answer Secret Question:

    Here you will have to enter your date of birth, select one of the secret questions which you would have mentioned while setting up your profile. Once you have selected the question, provide the answer, and click on submit.
    Now you will see a screen where you can confirm the email id and mobile number on which OTP will be sent. On the next screen, enter the OTP received either on Mobile or on Email Id and set the new password.

  5. Option 2: Upload DSC:

    If you have registered your Digital signature with your income tax login account, you can select this option and upload your registered Digital signature to reset your password.

  6. Option 3: Using E-filing OTP:

    a) Send the OTP to Registered Email ID and Mobile Number will be shown the partial impression of your email address and mobile number so that you can verify the same. If they are yours then just click on Validate and you will be sent OTP on your email id and mobile number. Enter both the OTP on the next screen, Validate and then enter your new passwords.
    b) Send the OTP to New Email ID and Mobile Number
    You can enter a new email address and mobile number on which you will receive the OTP. However, you will have to provide any of the following two pieces of information.
    TDS/TCS Deduction Details
    TAN of the Deductor,
    Assessment Year,
    Total Tax Deducted.
    Bank Account Number
    Bank Account Number (Mentioned while e-filing your ITR)

  7. Option 4: Using Aadhaar OTP:

    If you have linked your Aadhaar number with your e-Filing account earlier then you can use this option. You will receive an OTP on your Mobile number (which is linked to your Aadhaar number). Once you receive the OTP,  you can use the same to reset your password.

  8. Option 5: NetBanking Login

    It is necessary for you to already have pre-validated your bank account to opt for this option. This is a default option and allows you to reset the password at any time.


How much time does it take to reset the income tax password?

After you reset your password it can take up to 12 hours for your password to reset. Then you can use your new password to login to the Income-tax e-filing portal.

How long does one session of my Income Tax e-Filing account last?

A session for the Income Tax e-Filing account lasts for 45 minutes. The portal automatically logs you out after 45 minutes of inactivity. In case there has been activity in between those times, the timer is reset to 45 minutes again.
