  • Step 3: Click on the “Returns pending for e-Verification” option
  • Step 4: Next, click on the option to e verify the ITR
  • Step 5: Generate an EVC through Net banking
  • Step 6: Select the Union Bank of India option and log in using the net banking credentials

The facility provides a platform for taxpayers to make income tax payments online. The transactions can happen using Net-banking/Debit card mode of some selected Banks.

How can I pay my tax online?

e-Payment of your taxes can be done only through TIN-NSDL Portal only if:

1. You have a bank account with the Net-banking/Debit card of the selected Bank.
2. Your bank provides the e-payment facility.
After the conditions are fulfilled you can follow the above-mentioned steps to pay your Taxes online.

What if my bank doesn’t provide the e-Payment facility?

Well, in that case, you can do the e-Payment of your taxes from the account of any other person who has an account with the authorized bank having the online facility. However, make sure that on challan the mentioned PAN number belongs to you.

Advance Tax Payment Procedure Online on TIN-NSDL

Advance tax is the income tax payable if your tax liability exceeds INR 10,000 in a financial year and it should be paid in the year in which the income is earned. It is also called the ‘pay-as-you-earn’ scheme. It is required to be paid at quarterly intervals. The advance tax due dates for payment is on the 15th of each quarter-end.

There are two methods for payment of Advance Tax:

  • Online via TIN NSDL.
  • Offline via Bank Branch.

Steps for Online Payment of Advance Tax

  1. Aceess the TIN NSDSL e-payment Portal.

    Visit the TIN NSDL e-payment portal and Select Challan 280.

  2. Select the tax applicable and Payment Type.

    Select the Tax Applicable as (0021) Income Tax (Other than Companies). Later select Type of payment as (100) Advance Tax.

  3. Select Mode of Payment and name of Bank.

    Next, select the mode of payment from the different options and the name of your Bank.

  4. Enter the Details asked.

    Enter PAN and Other Details including your email Id and contact number.

  5. Select the Assessment Year.

    After selecting the Assessment Year, enter captcha and click on Proceed.

  6. Click on “Submit to the bank”.

    Verify the details that were entered and Click Submit.

  7. Now you can login to the net banking account of your bank to make the payment.

    Once you make the payment you will get challan counterfoil with Bank details. Save it for future reference.

Steps for payment of Advance Tax Offline

  1. Visit the bank branch and ask for the applicable tax payment challan form-Challan 280 (in this case).
  2. Fill in the details as required in the form. The details asked in the form are the same as required in the online form.
  3. Go to the relevant bank’s counter and submit the filled-in Challan 280 form along with the money. The tax payment can be made either in cash or cheque.
  4. Once you give the money and challan and the bank official will give you a receipt by tearing off a portion of the challan, filling in details of payment, and stamping it.

Once you have completed your advance tax payment by either the online or offline method, you should keep the receipts safely as proof of payment. It can approximately take up to 10 days to reflect in your Form 26AS. Your income tax payment should show in your Form 26AS Component ‘Part C – Details of Tax Paid’.

You can know details of Advance tax paid from your Form 26AS. Hence download Form 26AS from the income tax e-filing portal and show the same in your ITR.

What should I do if my bank does not have an online payment facility or is not an authorised bank for E-Tax ?

In case your bank does not have an online payment facility or is not an authorized bank then you can make electronic payment of tax from the account of any other person who has an account with the authorized bank having online facility.

What if my account gets debited twice for the Advance tax payment?

You should contact your Bank and ask for correction for double payment made for Advance tax.

Challan 280 : Self Assessment Tax and Advanced Tax Payment

Challan 280 is used for the payment of Non-TDS/TCS such as Self Assessment Tax, Advanced Tax on Regular Assessment, Surtax, Tax on Distributed Profits of Domestic Company, and Tax on Distributed income. Hence, the taxpayer can pay their taxes online using this challan on the TIN-NSDL portal. Moreover, taxpayers need to make the payment through this challan before their ITR.

Self Assessment Tax Payment

Any pending tax liability at the end of the financial year after calculating total taxable income and subtracting deductions & taxes paid is Self-Assessment tax. A taxpayer must pay self-assessment tax before he/she can file an ITR in India. While making the payment of self-assessment tax, the taxpayer should choose the option “(300) Self-Assessment Tax” under the Type of Payment option on the TIN-NSDL.

Advanced Tax Payment

Advance Tax is a part payment of your tax liability before the end of the financial year. It is also called pay as you earn scheme where the income tax should be paid in the year in which the income is received. While making the payment of advanced tax, the taxpayer should choose the option “(100) Advanced Tax” under the Type of Payment option on the TIN-NSDL.

Steps to Complete the Online Payment of Income Tax Using Challan 280

Time needed: 5 minutes.

  1. Go to the TIN NSDL e-payment Portal.

    Access the TIN-NSDL e-payment Portal by logging in with your credentials.

  2. Select Challan 280 for payment of income tax online.

    The Challan 280 will be there below the Income Declaration Scheme option.

  3. Enter Tax Payer Information: 

    – Select (0021) Income Tax (Other than Companies) if you are an individual taxpayer
    – Enter correct PAN of the taxpayer, Address and Assessment Year
    – Select Type of Payment

  4. Select Mode of Payment

    Select Mode of Payment i.e, Net Banking or Debit Card and click on proceed.

  5. Enter the address details and proceed to make payment.

    If you select the Net Banking option then login to your net banking account and make the payment of income tax. If you select the Debit Card option, enter the card details and proceed to payment.

  6.  Once tax payment is done, the taxpayer’s counterfoil will be generated.

    Save the challan and enter the details of the same while filing your ITR

If you face any issues while entering details in Challan 280 then you can connect to the TIN call center on 020-27218080 or write a mail at tininfo@nsdl.co.in. If you face any issues while making payment of tax then contact your bank. 

How do I get a duplicate challan for income tax paid?

Bank provides a facility for re-generation of challan online from the bank website. But if it is not possible to re-generate online then contact your bank and request them for the duplicate challan.

What if I select the wrong Assessment Year while paying Income Tax Online?

If you have selected the wrong assessment year while paying income tax then you can either contact your AO for making necessary changes or you can claim that challan in next year’s ITR.
